Chignin vs Chignin-Bergeron Same Village, Two Completely Different Wines

Chignin vs Chignin-Bergeron Même Village, Deux Vins Totalement Différents

Same soil, same address, but two characters that have almost nothing in common. Welcome to the duality of Savoie.

Have you ever seen these two appellations side-by-side on a wine list and wondered what the difference was? You're not alone. Chignin and Chignin-Bergeron: two names that share the same village nestled between Chambéry and Albertville, the same alpine sky, the same limestone slopes—and yet two wines that tell radically different stories in the glass.

For us, these two appellations have been at the heart of our identity for generations. In this article, we explain everything: the grape varieties, the aromatic profiles, the food pairings, and especially—which one to choose for which occasion. Spoiler: the right answer is often "both."

Chignin and Chignin-Bergeron: A Story of Grape Varieties Above All

Jacquère: the alpine lightness of our Chignin

Our Chignin is a dry white wine made from Jacquère, the king grape variety of Savoie. This small golden berry represents about 50% of the Savoie vineyards and thrives particularly well on our limestone hillsides in Chignin. Jacquère is a discreet grape in the vineyard but expressive in the glass: it loves poor soils, sunny exposures, and cool alpine nights.

What does it produce in our cellars? A wine of remarkable lightness, with delicate aromas of white flowers, peach, pear, and fresh almond, always supported by a lively and mineral acidity reminiscent of alpine spring water. A thirst-quenching, straightforward, easy-to-drink wine—one you open without a second thought on a summer Tuesday evening.

Here, Jacquère gives birth to two flagship cuvées:

  • Our Chignin "Vieilles Vignes" — the pure and frank expression of the grape, from our old vines with naturally controlled yields, offering unexpected concentration and depth at this price.

  • Our Chignin "Argile sur Schistes" — a single-vineyard cuvĂ©e that highlights the minerality of the clay and schist soil of our plots, with remarkable tension and length on the palate.

Bergeron, Alpine Roussanne, a grape of character

Our Chignin-Bergeron is another planet entirely. This wine is made from Bergeron, the local name for Roussanne in the Savoie Alps. This noble grape variety, found elsewhere in the RhĂ´ne Valley, has found an adopted home in our Chignin lands where it expresses itself with rare intensity and complexity.

Bergeron is known to be difficult to master, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. It ripens late, is susceptible to diseases, and requires constant attention throughout the season. But when given the care it deserves, it produces wines of astonishing aromatic richness: apricot, quince, honey, yellow flowers, toasted hazelnut, with a full body and an aging potential that makes it one of Savoie's great white wines for laying down.

Our Chignin-Bergeron Cuvées: Three Expressions, Three Terroirs

What is particularly important to us is that our Chignin-Bergeron is not a single cuvée—it is a conversation between different plots, each telling its own version of Bergeron.

Our Chignin-Bergeron "Exception"

The Exception cuvée is our ideal entry point into the world of Bergeron. A blend of several of our terroirs, it offers a rich and balanced aromatic palette—honey, apricot, sweet spices—with that acidity that keeps everything in tension. A Chignin-Bergeron for immediate pleasure, without austerity, which we readily recommend for a first discovery.

Our Chignin-Bergeron "St Anthelme"

The St Anthelme cuvée is distinguished by its traditional aging in oak barrels, which brings it an extra dimension: roundness, a subtle woody touch integrated into the body, and increased complexity. It is our quintessential table wine, which flourishes with gourmet dishes and ages wonderfully with a few years in your cellar.

Our Chignin-Bergeron "Les Salins"

The Les Salins cuvée is the most confidential and sought-after of our three Bergerons. From a small plot with arid and very calcareous soil, it embodies for us the quintessence of Chignin Bergeron: honeyed richness, aromatic purity, and saline minerality that runs through the wine and gives it an exceptional length on the palate. La Revue des Vins de France has regularly cited it among its favorites, and we are particularly proud of it.

Chignin or Chignin-Bergeron: Which to Choose?

The question often comes up during our tastings at the cellar, and our answer always depends on two things: the occasion and the mood of the moment.

Choose a Chignin if:

  • You're looking for a thirst-quenching wine for a casual evening.

  • You're preparing a Savoie fondue or raclette.

  • You want a fresh white to accompany lake fish.

  • Your budget is tight but your standards remain high.

Choose a Chignin-Bergeron if:

  • You want to impress your guests with a characterful white.

  • You're preparing a sauced dish, roasted poultry, or an aged cheese.

  • You want to cellar bottles to open in 3 to 5 years.

  • You're curious to discover what Roussanne can produce in the Alps.

And if you're still undecided, we invite you to explore our assortments which allow you to taste both families side-by-side—the best way to make a definitive choice, and to treat yourself in the process.

Organic and Biodynamic Agriculture

What unites all our cuvées—both Chignin and Chignin-Bergeron—is our winemaking philosophy. Since our conversion to organic and then biodynamic farming, we vinify with no sulfur or minimal additions at bottling, we favor long aging in vats, barrels, or amphorae, and we let each of our plots express its unique character.

The result is vibrant, expressive wines that evolve with time and in the glass. Wines that don't try to seduce at all costs from the first sip, but that reward attention and patience. To understand our approach fully, we invite you to read our history since 1850 and discover our vineyard in detail.

FAQ — Chignin vs Chignin-Bergeron

Is Chignin-Bergeron better than Chignin?

Not better—different. Our Chignin-Bergeron is more complex and powerful, but our Chignin has a freshness and lightness that Bergeron does not aim to achieve. Both have their purpose depending on the occasion, and we champion them with equal conviction.

Can Chignin white be aged?

The Chignin "Vieilles Vignes" can be kept for 3 to 4 years without problem. For longer aging, our Chignin-Bergeron excels, especially our "Les Salins" and "St Anthelme" cuvées which can last 8 to 10 years in good conditions.

At what temperature should your wines be served?

We recommend serving our Chignin between 8 and 10°C to preserve their freshness and vivacity. Our Chignin-Bergeron, being fuller-bodied, benefits from being served slightly warmer, around 10 to 12°C, so that their complex aromas can fully express themselves.

Where can I buy your Chignin and Chignin-Bergeron cuvées?

Directly from our online store, with UPS delivery in 48-72 hours. Or by visiting us at the cellar in Chignin (452 route des Enrayons), open 7 days a week — an on-site tasting is always the best way to discover our wines.

Is Bergeron the same as Roussanne?

Yes, Bergeron is the name we locally give to Roussanne in Savoie. Same grape variety, but a very different expression from what is found in the RhĂ´ne Valley, thanks to the calcareous terroir and alpine climate of our Chignin vineyards.
