Grapes gamay and pinot noir

This wine is our way of paying tribute to our ‘grandpa’ Marius, who, with his beret on his head, would hoe the parcel of Gamay behind his house by hand, right till his last days. His generosity and his taste for the simple things in life remain an inspiration to us today.

A blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, this wine combines the finesse of Pinot Noir, high in red fruit and low in tannins, with the more rustic character of Gamay.

Food/wine pairings: to accompany a picnic or barbecue, salads, saucisson and grilled meats. But the finesse of the Pinot also makes it an ideal partner for chicken with mushrooms, duck breast, or slightly spicy oriental cuisine, such as a lamb tajine.

Drink with modération.

Description

A blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, this wine combines the finesse of Pinot Noir, high in red fruit and low in tannins, with the more rustic character of Gamay. Together they form a well-balanced, lightly tannic, fresh wine with superbly ripe, crunchy red fruit in a luscious, easy-drinking style.

  • Grapes 50% pinot noir et 50% gamay
  • Organic farming with the introduction of biodynamic techniques
  • The grapes are hand-gripped between the 10th and 25th of September
  • Harvested in whole bunches in crates of 300 kg to prevent the berries being crushed
  • Sorting by hand and 100% destemming only for the pinot noir
  • Maceration without SO2 for 7 to 10 days in oak barrel (600 liters)
  • Ageing 12 months, 20% in demi-muids.
  • Low addition of SO2 at bottling, i.e. a final total rate under 30 mg/l.
  • Estate bottling respecting the lunar phases
  • Tasting Notes :
    • Aspect : lovely ruby red
    • Nose : fresh, elegant red fruit
    • Palate : juicy, crisp red fruit in superb balance with the finesse of the structure. A wine of pure pleasure.
  • Food/wine pairings: to accompany a picnic or barbecue, salads, saucisson and grilled meats. But the finesse of the Pinot also makes it an ideal partner for chicken with mushrooms, duck breast, or slightly spicy oriental cuisine, such as a lamb tajine.
  • Serve between 15 and 16°. Cellaring potential 4 to 5 years.

The vine

Our production of Gamay and Pinot Noir is very small, and is used principally to make our Sel de Marius, but also our rosé. In the spring these vines, like all our other vines on the lower slopes, are ploughed using horse traction, a technique which allows us to pass more easily between the rows of vines without risk of damaging them, but which also better respects the soil and the life within it.

  • Soil : limestone clay and glacial moraine
  • Orientation: South, south-west
  • Organic farming with the introduction of biodynamic techniques
  • Harvest : MANUAL – between the 10th and 25th of September since 2016 (between the 1st and 15th of October before 2000).
  • Age of vines : 20 to 80 years
  • Yield : 40 hl/HA
